Space Tourist Liquid Fuel Training Day
 September 2005 QinetiQ

Welcome to the September e-Newsletter from QinetiQ, which focuses this month on human performance.

With an ever-increasing focus on human performance, within dangerous or complex environments, the comfort and safety of personnel are becoming a key consideration for all employers. The recruitment and training of key personnel who operate high-value systems or are responsible for the safety of the public are, at the same time, becoming a fundamental part of policy in a growing number of organisations.

QinetiQ's Centre for Human Sciences (CHS) expertise and facilities are able to address these key issues, looking at the fundamentals of how an individual's performance is affected by factors such as adverse conditions, stress, ergonomics and clothing.

To study these performance issues, CHS has a wide range of facilities at its disposal including: the only 'man-carrying' centrifuge in the UK, to study the effects of high G acceleration; climatic chambers able to simulate environments from -20°c to 50°c; and a Category 1 Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy chamber; a sleep laboratory enabling the investigation of the sleep wakefulness continuum and the adverse effects of medication on vigilance and performance; and a Vibration and Disorientation Laboratory to help understand the effects of vibration and disorientation on the body.

The Haldane Spearman Consortium

QinetiQ acts as the prime contractor for this consortium which features more than 2,500 human science practitioners, 19 world-renowned experts and 44 national experts in their field. It also brings together 25 laboratories, 21 specialist facilities and 20 simulators.

The consortium has recently won a six year, £20 million contact with the MOD to look at the preparation of the armed forces for operations covering five key areas - physical, personnel, training, teams and medical.

QinetiQ carried out the essential centrifuge training and a medical assessment that has enabled Dr Greg Olsen, a multi millionaire US scientist and businessman, to become the third 'space tourist'. Dr Olsen blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on a Russian Soyuz craft on 1st October and will visit the International Space Station.

A product requirement specification developed by QinetiQ, working with the Defence Logistics Organisation (DLO), has led to the introduction of measures to tackle the adverse effects of dehydration on British troops.

An isotonic drink, Lucozade Sport Body Fuel, will be added to troops' 24 hour Operational Ration Pack. Announcing the award of the £1.5 million, three year enabling contract to GlaxoSmithKline to provide the isotonic drinks, Secretary of State for Defence John Reid said, "For a long time we have been very aware of the importance of getting the right combination of energy and nutrients from the food our soldiers eat, but it is only recently that we have started to examine the science behind what they drink."

The Secretary of State also welcomed the introduction of a new Commanders' Guide to fluid intake during military operations in the heat. Produced as part of MOD's Human Capability Research Programme and written by QinetiQ human scientists and Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) with input from external academics and nutritionists, it is published by the DLO and is expected to become essential reading for commanders preparing to take troops on operations.

Informal training day for Mark Webber, WilliamsF1 Driver

Informal training day for Mark Webber, WilliamsF1 Driver

As part of QinetiQ’s technical sponsorship of the WilliamsF1 team, driver Mark Webber was recently put through his paces in the climatic chambers at CHS in Farnborough. His core body temperature was monitored throughout via a remote radio pill. The importance of this test was highlighted during the recent Great North run, where there were a large number of people who suffered from illness due to their expanding body temperature.

Mark exercised in two hot environments and was subjected to the Multi-Attitude Task Battery which looks at the ability to react to threats and operate systems under duress, or after extreme physical training. His thermal outputs during training were also monitored for changes in core and skin temperatures, sweat rate and skin blood flow as a result of RF energy exposure.

Insight into getting the best out of people and technology, increasingly integrated into whole-system solutions across the range of physical and virtual environments, is critical in many work situations The Centre for Human Sciences is a unique resource able to address these challenges.
