The gap between business and innovation is often vast, and the pathway to delivering business success is mostly littered with complex, indecipherable information. But for Stephen Lake, the man behind QinetiQ's ventures and licensing programme, there is a simple message for technology innovators: "Be a risk-taker. Develop your technology and deliver it into the hands of your customer as soon as possible."
Lake, a speaker at this year's London Innovation Conference (18 March, 2005), says: "Get your technology road-tested, used and, most importantly, seen and talked about. Much is said about the need for market surveys and detailed customer-need studies, but the best mechanism for customer feedback is for them to actually use the technology." However, Lake continues, "There's no one-size-fits-all solution..."

With access to over 7000 leading science and technology experts QinetiQ’s innovation in security is delivering brilliant solutions to some of the most important problems faced by business, government and society today, and tomorrow. Innovative examples include:

As an alternative archway metal detector which detects ferromagnetic material contained in most metal weapons, QinetiQ Ferroguard can be fully configured to filter out detection of small metal items such as keys. This means the number of false alarms is very low. The system is easily wall or stand mounted and is also available as a portable stand-alone system, which can be deployed in less than 3 minutes. The system is also passive so has no effect on electronic devices such as pacemakers and mobile phones.

By integrating state of the art radar with an advanced real time digital signal processor, QinetiQ offers the very best system deployable with existing technology. Tarsier provides 360 degree, long range, real-time detection capability, which can detect and track a wide variety of targets, and can also be made interoperable with existing airport surveillance systems.

Undergoing six-month trials with Cambridgeshire and Hampshire Constabularies, Mirage allows the roof markings on vehicles to be read with a thermal-imaging camera. This enables air support police, co-ordinating chases in helicopters and aircraft, to distinguish between pursuers and the pursued.
John Bradley, Fleet Manager for Hampshire Constabulary says, "We are delighted to be involved in trialling this innovative material, and to be able to provide QinetiQ with valuable feedback provided by our Air Support Unit as well as those frontline officers operating vehicles for specialist operations. With regard to the advantages that this technology offers, any new technology that can assist our frontline officers in carrying out their duties in a more effective and efficient way is to be commended. We look forward in due course to applying this material to all of our marked vehicle fleet."
