Improved safety for MRI suites
Improved safety for MRI suites

QinetiQ has developed a new ferromagnetic detection system that will protect Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) suites, providing a new level of safety for patients, medical staff and equipment.

The QinetiQ Ferroguard® MRI System automatically scans people as they enter MRI suites and sounds an alarm if any potentially lethal ferromagnetic objects are detected. Ferroguard MRI is inexpensive and comprises a small box bolted to either side of a doorway or corridor. It allows harmless metals to pass by and only gives an alarm when ferromagnetic objects are detected.

Preventing people from using mobile phones within certain areas of an airport or other buildings offers significant security and operational advantages. So QinetiQ has developed a low cost manufacturing process to make Frequency Selective 'wallpaper' Screens (FSS) to do just this.

The wallpaper allows certain wavelengths to pass through them whilst preventing others, so mobile phone or WiFi signals are effectively blocked out but two-way radio and other similar systems are totally unaffected.

Based on military image analysis technology, QinetiQ has developed the world's first automatic breast cancer diagnostic system, PathScore. Evaluation of the system showed that its performance is similar to that of the human pathologist, but it provides enhanced reproducibility. Unlike a human, it never gets tired and so can be used 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

The food monitors
The food monitors

QinetiQ has pioneered and enhanced techniques to detect foreign objects in pre-prepared foods. More sophisticated, low-cost sensing and imaging techniques coupled with enhancement of existing x-ray algorithms, suggest that complex packaging and products like sandwiches could potentially be handled.

Thousands of foreign objects are reported in foods every year around the UK and cost businesses millions of pounds. QinetiQ technologies like active microwave and radio frequency could be used to find the foreign bodies in the food processing industry.
