Aerial contract targeted |
QinetiQ has signed a contract with the MOD to supply a Combined Aerial Target Service (CATS) for the UK's armed forces. Worth up to £308 million over 20 years, this is QinetiQ's largest competed sale to date.
Through the contract, QinetiQ will provide a service that meets all of the MOD's aerial target requirements worldwide including ground-based air defence training, aerial target services for the Royal Navy, and an air-to-air service for the RAF.

Trapping boats in the US |
QinetiQ subsidiary Foster-Miller, has been awarded a $1 million contract to further develop its advanced Boat Trap system by the United States Department of Defense Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate, working closely with the US Coast Guard.
Designed to bolster US harbour security and protect coastal military bases abroad, Boat Trap is a non lethal, ballistic net that is deployed from a helicopter into the path of a threatening speedboat travelling at high speed. It is designed to entangle the propeller, causing the craft to immediately stop.

Strategic role in unmanned aerial demonstrator |
The MOD has just awarded a BAE Systems led team, which includes QinetiQ, Rolls-Royce and Smiths Aerospace, a £124 million jointly-funded MOD and UK industry programme, to develop a world-class UAV (Unmanned Air Vehicle) 'Technology Demonstrator' project called 'Taranis'.
The team will work alongside MOD military staff and scientists on this four-year project, part of the UK Government's Strategic Unmanned Air Vehicle (Experimental) Programme [SUAV(E)], and will develop and fly a vehicle which will include fully integrated autonomous systems and low observable features.

Next generation bomb disposal |
Northrop Grumman through its Remotec UK subsidiary, which is teamed with QinetiQ, has been appointed prime contractor for Phase II of the Ministry of Defence (MOD) CUTLASS robotics programme. The CUTLASS programme will provide the next generation of unmanned ground vehicle for explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) to be used by the MOD for anti-terrorism operations worldwide. The bulk of deliveries will take place in 2010.
The CUTLASS system offers the latest technology in a modular design, enabling the user to deal with the full range of both military and improvised explosive devices. Its sophisticated, large, rugged but highly versatile design means that it is capable of accommodating a wide range of payloads, sensors and tools.
