Gravity mission to benefit from QinetiQ precision |
QinetiQ has conducted the final testing of its T5 ion thrusters that will enable a European Space Centre mission to measure and map the Earth's gravity field in far greater detail than ever previously achieved. QinetiQ's T5 ion thrusters will provide high precision drag compensation for the Gravity Field and Steady State Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) spacecraft, due for launch later this year. The data captured will contribute significantly to our understanding of the Earth's structure, climate and the impacts of climate change.

Merlin - keeping an eye on space weather |
QinetiQ's Merlin space weather hazard monitor has now been selected by NASA to support the 'Living with a Star' programme. Merlin will help NASA to understand better how high-energy particles and radiation produced by the sun can affect life on Earth. Merlin has already achieved 12 months flying on GIOVE-A, the test-bed spacecraft for Europe's Galileo satellite navigation system, and is based on two decades of pioneering research into the effects of solar activity.
